What kind of pump?
I had a stealth heater do that once, luckily didn't lose anything.

Also, is there anything you can see in the tank that leads one to think of this solution in the first place? I know I've heard of it happening but I don't think it would ever occur to me, unless I got a shock myself while fooling around in the tank.

Our first tank - 90 Gal
Other than fish dying there were no other symptoms. The inverts were doing great and so were the corals. Fish just suddenly started dying. I was told that Gobies and some tangs are particularly sensitive to it. I read that some fish may scratch on rocks too.
